Tonatiuh’s children sections, better known as Tonatitos were born in 1994. These were initiated by Maria C. Ramirez, Lorena Silva and Roberto Barajas concurrently at 3 schools in the Alisal Union School District: Fremont, Virginia Rocca Barton, and Alisal Community. However, by the turn of the new millennium these sections disappeared to later make a return in 2006 at César Chávez Elementary. By 2022 the sections of Tonatitos grew tremendously, the program expanded to all 12 schools at the AUSD and 3 schools in the Salinas City School District. These programs are mostly taught by dancers, who teach 2 sections @ each school. The program serves an average of 30 dancers @ each of the 15 schools. The program is completely free for kids and parents. For performances Tonatiuh provides all outfits and accessories and the school sites provide dance shoes.
